There is something incredibly special about those first few weeks at home with a new baby.
The sleepy stretches. Tiny fingers wrapped around yours. The way they curl perfectly against your chest. Big siblings peeking into the bassinet. The snuggles on the couch and even those little moments of beautiful chaos that come with adjusting to life with a newborn.
These are the moments I love capturing during a lifestyle newborn photography session in St. Louis.
Lifestyle newborn photography isn't about creating perfectly posed photographs or expecting your baby to sleep through an entire session. It's about documenting your family as you are in this season—connected, loving, a little tired, and completely wrapped up in this brand-new person who has changed your world.
A lifestyle newborn session is a relaxed approach to newborn photography that focuses on connection and genuine moments rather than elaborate poses and props.
Your baby may be photographed snuggled against Mom or Dad, lying safely on the bed, stretching in the nursery, being loved on by siblings, or curled up in your arms.
And your baby doesn't have to sleep the entire time.
Some of my favorite newborn photographs happen when babies are wide awake, looking around and taking in their new world.
We follow baby's lead. If your little one needs to eat, we stop. If they need a diaper change, we stop. If they simply need to be held for a while, that's part of the session too.
There is no rush.
One of the biggest advantages of an in-home newborn photography session is that you don't have to pack up your brand-new baby and bring half the house with you.
I come to you.
Your home also becomes part of your baby's story.
The nursery you spent months preparing, the couch where you've already spent countless hours feeding and snuggling your baby, your bedroom, and all of those little details that make your home yours create a meaningful backdrop for your photographs.
Years from now, those details may mean just as much as the photographs themselves.
And please don't worry about having a Pinterest-perfect house.
You don't need one.
Beautiful lifestyle newborn photography is about finding lovely light, meaningful spaces and, most importantly, the connection between the people in front of my camera.
Bring on the siblings.
As a St. Louis lifestyle newborn photographer, I don't expect toddlers or young children to sit perfectly beside their new baby and smile on command.
Instead, we let them interact.
They can count baby's toes, give kisses, snuggle with Mom, jump onto the bed, show me their favorite toy or take a break when they've had enough.
Sometimes the photograph of a toddler cautiously reaching out to touch their new sibling's tiny hand tells the story far better than a perfectly posed sibling portrait ever could.
The goal isn't perfection.
It's connection.
Traditional posed newborn photography is often scheduled during the first couple of weeks after birth, but lifestyle newborn sessions offer much more flexibility.
If you're recovering from birth, adjusting to feeding, spending additional time in the hospital, or simply need a little more time before having photographs taken, that's okay.
Your baby's story doesn't expire at two weeks old.
Three weeks, four weeks, six weeks—or even a little later—can still be a beautiful time for a lifestyle newborn session.
Your baby may be more alert, make more eye contact or stretch out a little more. Those are wonderful things to document too.
For lifestyle newborn photography, I usually recommend keeping clothing comfortable and relatively simple.
Neutral and earthy tones photograph beautifully and help keep the attention on your family rather than your clothing. Cream, oatmeal, beige, soft gray, muted greens, dusty blues and other gentle colors tend to work especially well.
You don't need to match.
Instead, choose colors and textures that coordinate while still allowing everyone to look like themselves.
Most importantly, wear something you feel comfortable in. You just had a baby. You deserve to feel beautiful without feeling uncomfortable.
During every newborn session, I make time for the tiny details that change far too quickly.
The flaky newborn skin.
Tiny toes.
Wispy hair.
Little lips.
Wrinkled fingers.
Hospital bracelets you haven't quite been ready to remove.
The way your baby's hand looks inside yours.
One day, those impossibly tiny fingers won't be so tiny anymore.
Photographs give you a way to remember.
One thing I especially love about working with growing families is being able to document more than one chapter of their story.
As a St. Louis maternity, birth and newborn photographer—and a doula—I have the privilege of walking alongside families during one of the biggest transitions of their lives.
Sometimes I meet a baby before they're even born during a maternity session.
Sometimes I'm there in the birth room as their doula and birth photographer.
Sometimes I meet them during those first hours in the hospital for a Fresh 48 session.
And sometimes I walk through the front door a few weeks later and find a family settling into their new normal.
Every piece tells a different part of the story.
Parents sometimes worry that their baby will cry through the entire session.
Or that their toddler won't cooperate.
Or that their house isn't clean enough.
Please don't let those things stop you from documenting this season.
Babies cry.
Toddlers have opinions.
Houses look lived in.
New parents are tired.
This is real life, and real life is worth remembering.
My job isn't to arrive expecting perfection. It's to create a calm, comfortable environment where your family can simply be together while I document the love that's already there.
If you're expecting a baby and searching for lifestyle newborn photography in St. Louis, I would love to help you document this incredibly fleeting season.
Whether you choose an in-home newborn session, maternity photography, birth photography, a Fresh 48 session, or a combination of these experiences, my goal is always the same:
To preserve what this season felt like, not simply what it looked like.
Because someday your baby won't fit against your chest quite this way.
Their tiny fingers won't curl around yours.
The nursery will change.
The newborn stretches will disappear.
But you'll have the photographs that take you right back.
