There is something so special about an in-home maternity session. It’s relaxed, intimate, and allows us to capture this season of life in a place that has meaning to your family.
But an in-home maternity session doesn’t necessarily have to take place in your home.
For this beautiful St. Louis in-home maternity session, we chose Grandma’s house—a place this sweet baby may not come home from the hospital to, but one they will undoubtedly visit again and again throughout their childhood.
And I absolutely love that.
Grandma’s house already holds years of memories, family stories, celebrations, and love. Soon, it will hold memories with one more very special little person.
That made it such a meaningful setting for this lifestyle maternity photography session.
Maternity photography is about so much more than documenting a growing belly. It’s about remembering what life felt like while you waited for your baby. The excitement. The anticipation. The connection between you and this tiny person you haven’t even met yet.
Choosing a family home added another layer to that story.
When I mention in-home maternity photography, sometimes people immediately think their own house has to be picture-perfect.
It doesn't.
First, your home never has to be perfect for a photography session. Real homes are lived in, and that's part of what makes lifestyle photography beautiful.
But we can also choose a place that simply means something to you.
Maybe that's Grandma's house, your childhood home, or another family member's home where your baby will spend countless holidays, birthdays, Sunday dinners, and ordinary afternoons.
Those familiar spaces can create some of the most meaningful maternity photos because they're already part of your family's story.
One of my favorite things about lifestyle maternity photography is that we don't have to spend the entire session worrying about perfect poses.
Instead, I look for connection.
A hand resting naturally on your belly. A quiet moment near a window. Laughter between you and your partner. The little details that might not seem significant right now but will mean so much when you look back years from now.
For an in-home maternity session, we can use beautiful window light and the spaces that work best within the home. You don't need a magazine-worthy house or perfectly decorated rooms. We simply find the light, slow things down, and create images that feel like you.
Pregnancy can feel incredibly long while you're living it, but once your baby arrives, this season suddenly feels so fleeting.
That's one of the reasons I believe maternity photography is so important.
Someday, this baby may look at these photographs and recognize Grandma's house. They'll know that before they were even born, they were already being celebrated in a place that would become part of their childhood.
And I think that's pretty amazing.
If you're expecting and looking for a St. Louis maternity photographer, I'd love to help you create a session that feels personal to your family.
Your maternity session can take place in your home, at Grandma's house, outdoors at one of my favorite St. Louis-area locations, or in my greenhouse studio in Cedar Hill, Missouri.
Whether you're looking for natural maternity photography, an intimate lifestyle session, or photography that continues through birth and your baby's newborn days, my goal is to document your family with connection and emotion at the center of it all.
Because these aren't just photographs of what your family looked like.
They're photographs of what this season felt like.
